Finding the lifetimes and lifelines of genealogy is fascinating and fulfilling, regardless of any famous or infamous ancestors. However, the historical stories of family trees are what make genealogy so absorbingly interesting. Do you ever wonder if these stories are true? You can be related to any number of famous or infamous ancestors and various captivating relatives in between. Do you know who your ancestors are? Do you know where they came from, each of them? All the answers you seek to know yourself are waiting for you with the study of your ancestry, which is genealogy.

Indeed, the idealized vision of the samurai’s goal was to blend of the art of warfare with other, more traditional, arts such as poetry, painting, or shodo, the art of writing Japanese symbols. Because the samurai formed the foundation for the rest of the Japanese aristocracy, it was crucial that they be educated. This would lead to a surprisingly high rate of literacy amongst this warrior caste.

There were two kinds of stations on the Pony Express route: “swing,” or relay stations and home stations. At the swing stations, riders changed horses; at the home stations, riders traded their 50-75 miles in the saddle for a chance to bunk overnight until they were up again to relieve a rider coming from the opposite direction. In some cases, riders earned fame and their reputations when Indian trouble, or the violence of the weather stopped their relief from coming through and they had to double up and ride more than their alloted miles.

However, the Samurai wasn’t limited to engaging only in melee battles, as they were also well-trained in the use of the longbow while on foot and smaller bows while on horseback, enabling them to deal death from a distance.

The USGenWeb Project is a good starting point for researching your family history. The information is divided into individual county and state websites that also include resources for locating immigrants. Such resources may include family trees, birth, marriage and death documents and other types of historical records. There are onsite researchers there to help you search for information. You can include traveling to areas of family history or to find them by visiting the area in which they lived. Visit the department of vital records and the courthouse to find information. You can get information from churches that your ancestors may have attended. You can find more leads on birth certificates, marriage licenses and death certificates.

A number of years have gone by since our trip (we did it in 1992), but the people and artifacts of this colorful trail are still there and still very worth seeing. This is the first of several articles I will be writing to share our impressions and some of the things we learned about this brief, romantic period in the life and history of the Old West as we took to the trail. I hope you’ll ride along with us!
